Retaining Walls for Slopes & Grade Changes
Changes in elevation can make portions of a yard difficult to use or maintain. Retaining walls provide a way to work with these conditions by holding back soil and creating more defined, level areas within the landscape.
Depending on the property, a wall may be used to support a slope, create terraced planting beds, define the edge of a patio, or help transition between different elevations. Terraced walls can be particularly useful when a single steep slope occupies a significant portion of the yard, allowing the landscape to be divided into smaller and more manageable areas.
Retaining walls can also be coordinated with steps and walkways to create practical routes through properties with changing elevations.
Proper Construction & Drainage
The appearance of a retaining wall matters, but much of its long-term performance depends on what happens behind and beneath it. Site preparation, excavation, a properly prepared base, drainage, and construction methods all need to be considered based on the wall and surrounding conditions.
Drainage is especially important because water collecting behind a retaining wall can place additional pressure on the structure.
